Imaging recource: Video: Nigel Danson embarks upon a 30-day journey to photograph just one beach

Photographer Nigel Danson recently embarked upon one of the greatest projects of his three decades of photography. Danson spent 30 days photographing a single beach, Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris in Scotland. While many photographers spend an entire day, or even a few days, photographing a single location, not many spend a month straight exploring the same spot. However, there are many benefits to repeated exposure to the same area, especially when it's a coastal area, which rapidly changes with shifting tides and enigmatic...

Imaging recource: OMDS Q&A at CP+2023: OM-5 details, E-M1X/E-M1 III/E-M10 IV going away? Amazing new 90mm macro

I’m writing the first draft of this article about a week after the CP+ 2023 show in Yokohama Japan, sitting happily in a hotel room in northern Japan (Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima prefecture). Aizu is a small city surrounded by mountains, with cheaper hotels and fewer distractions than Tokyo has to offer; I chose to spend some time here to focus and make some headway on writing up the pile of interview material I have from the show. (This was only partially successful, Aizu is also known for its excellent Sake, or Nihon-shu as the...

Imaging recource: Sony Q&A at CP+ 2023: Sony’s lens strategy, why the new FE 50mm F1.4 GM is *so* good and more

There’s been a lot of activity in Sony’s lens lineup lately, with the second generation of some of their classic designs appearing recently, and some entirely new models as well. Just before the start of CP+, they announced a frankly amazing update to the well-regarded 50mm F1.4 Zeiss first released 6 years ago. I was thus happy to have the chance to speak with Masanori Kishi, who is the Senior General Manager of their Lens System Business Division, in the Imaging Products & Solutions Business Group. Kishi-san has overall...

Imaging recource: Do you need a new camera to improve your photography?

Technology moves fast, and a constant stream of new cameras is hitting store shelves with new and better sensors, faster autofocus, more sophisticated features, improved video quality, and shiny new bells and whistles. New cameras can be very tempting, but before throwing thousands of dollars at new gear, it's worth asking yourself, "Do I need a new camera?" Determining necessity versus desire is important. It may be easier for full-time professionals to convince themselves they "need" a new camera. For enthusiasts, the situation...

Imaging recource: How does your camera and image processing software affect and determine colors?

Color is a huge topic in photography. You'll be hard-pressed to wander through online photography forums without tripping over a group of shutterbugs arguing over which manufacturer's "colors are best." Like warring cavemen bashing each other with clubs, even the "winner" of a colorful debate, if there is such a thing, won't leave the battle unscathed. Photography expert Jim Kasson has returned to the Lensrentals Blog to give as close to a "final word" on camera color as you can get. Kasson is extremely well-equipped to tackle...

Imaging recource: DPReview: Some personal thoughts on a sad day…

This is a sad day... It’s hard to convey the sense of shock and dismay I felt when a message from a colleague appeared this morning, telling me that DPReview was closing. I’m still trying to process it. IR and DPR grew up together as the industry matured from the days when a megapixel was the norm and two was something to shout about. (I launched IR in April of 1998, and Phil Askey launched DPR in December the same year.) As both sites grew, the other was always there, and I myself have and continue to use the DPR site as...

DPReview has long been a major player in the photo industry and an incredible resource...

The interviews are published in Japanese, so as always, there's the potential for something to be lost in translation or misconstrued. That said, we saw some interesting highlights on Sony Alpha Rumors. Reading the full interviews, it's...

Imaging recource: Webb captures stunning images of the brief, rare, and spectacular Wolf-Rayet phase of a massive star

The James Webb Space Telescope observed a rare Wolf-Rayet star last June, although NASA announced it this week. The star, WR 124, is showcased in unprecedented detail thanks to Webb's sophisticated imaging instruments. WR 124 is about 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. WR 124 is massive – about 30 times more massive than the Sun. Wolf-Rayet, or WR, stars are rare heterogeneous sets of stars. Massive stars like WR 124 "race through their lifecycles," and some, like WR 124, go through a brief Wolf-Rayet phase...

I’m writing this a few days after the CP+ 2023 photo trade show in Yokohama, Japan, sitting happily in a hotel room in northern Japan (Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima prefecture). It’s just the first of eight interviews with photo-industry executives that I’ll be publishing in the coming weeks.
