DPReview: Fujfilm announces development GFX medium-format digital

Breaking news: Fujifilm is getting (back) into medium-format. A major player in the days of film, Fujifilm has announced its first medium-format digital camera, the GFX.

Based around the same 51.4MP CMOS sensor that we've seen in the Pentax 645Z and Hasselblad XQD, the DSLR-styled camera looks a lot like an upsized X-T2. With a sensor area around 4x greater than that used in the company's APS-C X-series cameras, the new camera does not feature Fujifilm's propriatary X-Trans filter array, and instead uses a conventional Bayer-pattern filter. Although this may mean that absolute resolution is slightly lower than it might be from an X-Trans design, files from the camera should be more easily handled by third-party Raw converters.

'X is focused on compactness, GFX allows different aspect ratios and the ultimate image quality. X and GFX: two systems that complement each other.'

Fujifilm first attended Photokina in 1966 and has attended every two years since then. 1968 brought the G690 6x9 medium format camera. In 1978 large format Fujinon W series of lenses. Used by the likes of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. 1988 Fujix DS-1P 'World's first digital imaging system concept.' 2010 introduced X100 concept model: 'a fusion of our analogue legacy and digital future.'

We'll be adding to this story as the press conference continues.
