On August 21, 2017, the full moon will orbit the Earth at just the right angle so that during the day, it will completely obscure the sun -- a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse isn't actually that rare -- it happens between two to five times per year, but because of how the moon orbits the Earth, it's not often that the eclipse is obviously viewable.
